Water Level Monitoring


Water Level

Water Level monitoring is very important for very different reasons in different situations. Sometimes, you want to ensure that your water level is high enough in a reservoir to maintain a stable supply to a water scheme. In other situations, you may want to ensure that water levels do no encroach on assets such as railway tracks or roads.

Our Water Level Sensor works equally well measuring lake/ flood/ river level or water reservoir level. The Level Sensor is vented and so, adjusts to ambient pressure changes automatically without the need for complicated corrections for changes to atmospheric pressure.




Sensing Water Level

There are many ways of measuring liquid level. Here are some of the more common methods:

  • Submerged Pressure Transducer: the pressure exerted by the column of fluid above the sensing membrane changes the pressure proportionally to the height of fluid above the sensing membrane.
  • Bubble Transducer: a bubble of a gas is forced down a dip-tube with its opening near the bottom of the fluid. The pressure required to force the bubble out of the tube is proportional to the height of fluid above the dip-tube
  • Ultrasonic Transducer: an ultrasonic transducer is fitted above the fluid surface and the sensor calculates the time taken for the ultrasonic pulse to bounce off the fluid surface and back to the transducer
  • Various Float Transducers: in general, these are magnetic floats that sit on top of the fluid surface (usually ina guide pipe etc). The magnetic float is coupled to either a visual gauge that moves with the float or an LVDT that electronically measures the position of the float

Water Level Measurement

We use Pressure Transducers to measure Water Level. The transducers are vented, meaning that the readings are automatically corrected for fluctuations in atmospheric pressure. Our standard set-up measures the water level every 10 minutes and sends the data back to our database for display and Alarm processing (if required). We have found 10 minute intervals to be a good balance between data costs and accuracy of readings. If required for a Customer, we can change the reporting frequency.
